A man born of the land, Chief David Janvier (1937 - 2018) was a strong leader and supporter of his home community of Kai’ Kos’ Dehseh (Christina River) in Janvier. He was front and centre to the issues that affected the people because of colonization that included the fight to uphold treaty rights and maintaining natural law. It is said that he led by example, pushing forward through adversity to growth and always with the love for his family and community at the forefront.

David Janvier was Chief of Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation for many years, being vocal in the political stage regarding Indigenous rights and sovereignty, creating housing and work programs, and in the process, shaping the generations of leadership after him.

“His legacy lives on through his children and the knowledge he left behind,” says his daughter, Marina Nokohoo, “even though he is gone, his spirit is still here.
