Engagement Summary

The engagement for Reflections Lookout Park ran from November 30 – December 14, 2020. The survey was open to the entire region, and special consideration was given to the feedback provided by residents of Beacon Hill. On December 7, fliers were distributed to residents in Beacon Hill to encourage neighbourhood participation in the engagement process.

Of the 409 survey respondents, 47% felt that the proposed designs represented a meaningful tribute to the recovery process. The community also expressed a preference for the park to be a quiet, natural, well-maintained space.

Survey respondents noted that they did not support the name “Wildfire Memorial Park” for a variety of reasons. Residents of Beacon Hill, in particular, felt that the word “memorial” would present an unwanted reminder of the events of the 2016 Horse River Wildfire.

Feedback collected through public engagements was used to guide design concepts and potential names brought forward by the Community Identification Committee (CIC). The name of the park – Reflections Lookout - was selected by the CIC based on suggestions provided by survey respondents through the engagement. On January 11, 2022, Council unanimously approved the name selected by the CIC.
