The Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) is in development, it will determine what happens to your garbage and recycling in the future.

With the survey now closed, you can subscribe to this page and receive notifications as this project moves forward.

Check out the What We Heard Report to see a summary of the survey responses. A What We Heard Report is also available for the Business Engagement Luncheon that was hosted as part of the business engagement for this project.

Why do we need a plan to manage solid waste?

The SWMP will inform how waste is managed across the region to reduce waste, expand and enhance services, manage costs over time and extend the life of the landfills. It will also align with provincial and federal policies, protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while striving to meet resident composting and recycling expectations.

  • We send approximately 85,000 metric tonnes of garbage to the region's landfills each year, which adds up to about 1,000 kilograms of garbage per person.

Recent waste composition studies show that over 70 per cent of what we throw away as garbage can be diverted as recycling and composting.
